PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Foster Top Finish Foiled by Tire Trouble May 2, 2007 Anderson, CA
Ryan Foster's return to Altamont this past weekend had every possibility of being his
strongest finish in the Grand National Series, but tire problems brought the promise of a
top five finish to an abrupt end. Altamont, one of Foster's favorite tracks, was mired in
record breaking heat which made racing physically harder and car setup more challenging
than usual. Infamous for hot days and cool windy evenings the 1/2 mile oval can be a
crapshoot when it comes to getting the setup right so that qualifying on hot pavement will
balance out with a long night of laps on cooler surfaces. It seems that the Golden Gate
Team had done well. Despite garnering a disappointing 10th place qualifying time in car
that car that was loose, Foster and the crew knew that at as the sun set conditions would
tighten the car up to be a strong contender.
And so it was. The 200 lap race was divided at the half-way point by a 10 minutes pit time
for the field. The first half of the race was a patience-testing waiting game for the
Rookie Driver. Numerous caution laps thwarted long run charges but Foster gained spots
quickly up to 8th before the pit stop time.
After the stop the #21 Monte Carlo was primed and ready for a late race charge to the
front. In an on-track interview during the break, Foster told the crowd, "I've just
been holding back and now I'm ready to get it done." Over the next 42 laps the
handpicked Richard Childress Development driver wend his way to the 5th spot. On lap 42
another car blew a motor and brought out the caution, then a red flag stop.
On the restart after the long delay Foster slowed dramatically on the backstretch, made it
to the pits where it was found that the right front tire was down. A quick change and he
was back out - only to discover that both rear tires were down. The crew, taxed at facing
3 flats in a row scrambled to get the front running Golden Gate Meat Company entry back on
the track. Extra grease-sweep in the pits made the blacktop slick and it was a struggle to
keep the jack in place during the changes. The laps continued to tick off and Foster was
down 12 laps by the time the tire debacle had been straightened up. The hard charging
Legend and Outlaw Kart Champion, not fazed by mechanical mishaps, stormed his way through
the pack making up enough laps to finish in 21st spot.
After the race Foster said, "After a night like this, it is nice to know that I have
another chance to race in just a few weeks." Jim Offenbach and all the sponsors gave
me such a great car, and Steve Portenga and the crew worked so hard to make it really
shine in the feature, that I'm looking forward to getting to Elko and getting a win."
The Ryan Foster Fan Club showed their gratitude to the fans by giving away 2 3-day passes
to the NEXTEL Cup Race at Infineon Speedway June 22-24. The winner of the package was a 12
year Foster Fan. In a brief interview the youngster said he is very excited about getting
to meet his favorite driver, Jeff Gordon, at the Roadcourse race.
