June 20, 2007
San Francisco, CA
Ryan Foster will be facing an interesting challenge this weekend at the Sunscream 200; the
rookie RCR Developmental Driver has virtually no experience on road courses. Does this
seem to bother anyone? - No. Foster's middle name is "adaptable". This young
driver is a chameleon on par with Tony Stewart, able to hop in any vehicle, on any track
surface or condition, and win.
Beginning his career on dirt with Outlaw Winged Sprint Karts at the age of 8, Foster
transitioned effortlessly into asphalt Late Models at the age of 15. After a spectacular
showing in the stock cars he jumped back to open wheel racing with Legends where he took
numerous state and national championships. From there he moved right back into heavy late
models and tour cars on short tracks and super speedways, all the while being able to drop
into anything, go out, race and win.
With this level of adaptability comes the confidence to tackle another aspect of racing -
the right turn. Not just any right turn, but the esteemed course at Infineon Raceway.
Foster will be running against some veteran road course drivers including, Boris Said,
Kenny Shepherd, and Tommy Hubert who happens to hail from the same hometown as Foster. The
two have raced each other numerous times in the Outlaw Karts but this will be the first
time they to head to head in on a road course.
Foster is coming off a great run at Colorado in the NAPA 150 where he finished 3rd place
behind Mike Duncan and Mike David. The strong finish has moved Foster back into the top
ten points standings. He posted the second fastest lap in qualifying and finally was able
to start a race in a decent position. From there he was able to show that he can run with
the top cars and drivers. The TV commentators from HDNET and SPEED TV spotlighted Foster a
number of times especially when he went over a dozens laps battling side-by-side with Mike
David.
"It was really an exciting race. To be able to run upfront on a good track and
against competitors like the two Mikes was a refreshing change from some of the recent
starting positions and bad luck with tires we've had." Said Foster reflecting on the
NAPA race. "I think I'm going to be able to get around Infineon pretty well. I like a
good challenge and this (road courses) is something I've always wanted to try. Our
crewchief, Steve Portenga, has a ton of experience at road courses and especially Infineon
and I have a lot of confidence in his ability to setup the car to match my style of
driving so that we can come away with a good finish."
This is a special event for the Golden Gate Racing Team as it is in their backyard. Based
in San Francisco the team's owner, Jim Offenbach loves the Sonoma wine country and will be
inviting all the local sponsors and supporters to watch the race, including long time
friend, Richard Childress who has lent so much support to the team and drivers. This is
also the first local race for the new sponsors, Golden Gate Petroleum and Bay Biodiesel
who joined the team just last month and formed an important partnership with Offenbach's
Golden Gate Meat Company when "The Butchers by the Bay" chose to convert their
entire truck fleet over to the more eco-friendly biodiesel products that Bay Biodiesel
produces. This is our chance to have the sponsors come and watch in person the
talent this young man has. Its been a fun and challenging season so far
and I cant wait to see Ryan run this course. Said Offenbach.
The race will once again be broadcast live on HDNET on Saturday, June 23 with an enhanced
broadcast on SPEED TV July 3, 2:30 p.m. ET.
